Method of Documentations

Method of Documentations, technically enhances the sense to the form and space by recording down the dimension of the spaces and learn to investigate the depth of each space.

The teaching objectives of the module are to:

-Introduce several methods of documenting historic structures to preserve an accurate record of historic properties that can be used in research and other preservation/ conservation activities.

-Introduce basic preparation of measured drawings of a selected building or structure to prescribed standard.

PROJECT 1

Onsite Observation Journal & Video

Objective:

This project is an on-site exercise where students have to document the physical and the immediate context of the site. It can be from an element as broad as the urban planning itself down to the smallest detail of the ornaments used in the building. Observation makes the senses sharper when sketching, eventually enhance the mind formation of detailing and patterns, emphasized the ornaments of the buildings indirectly.

This is an individual project. We require to sketch at least 10 sketches on the journal by observing the emphasized elements on site. Detailing and patterns that enhance the architectural style and element are used to be observed and sketched, as well as the layout of spaces and formation are also one of the vital element that emphasized the building. We also require to make a short video that present about the progress of our on-site visit and activities.

Submission:

1. 10 A4 On-site sketches.

2. Short video.

PROJECT 2

Building Report & Photobook

Objective:

The report is an additional document that accompanies the set of drawings for the building that is measured during the semester. It will elaborate on the significance of the building measured from various aspects such as architectural, historical and cultural. Students are required to prepare a report and photo book.

This is a group project. We require to write a report about the building, focusing on its information, architectural style and history. The report also mentions about the detailing figures and patterns of the building in architectural style and element that brings its architecture history. Construction details, technical drawings and ownership details are also highlighted in the report. We are also require to create our own photobook that included 50 of the photos that were taken on site visit, including interior, exterior and detailing of the building structure.

Submission:

1. Building Report

2. Photobook

PROJECT 3

Measured Drawings and Model

Objective:

This project will be carried out throughout the semester where students will be assigned to measure and document a historical / architecturally significant or heritage building and translate all the data into a set of drawings. Each group will have to only measure one particular assigned by the course coordinator. Apart from doing the measuring exercise on site, students will also need to do additional research in order to piece together all the important data about the building. The model will provide additional physical information of the building.

This is a group and individual project. We require to draw a series of technical drawing including orthographic drawings, axonometric drawings and site drawings, precisely. We are taught to use AutoCAD to draw the series of precise drawings of the building that brings the effeciency of outcome, especially the drawings of detailing and pattern of architectural style. We are also told to make a model building with suitable materials. The model is constructed with the scale of 1:75 and balsa woods are commonly used in this model making.

Submission:

1. List of AutoCAD technical drawings

2. Model with scale 1:75.

Reflection

From this big project we worked in a group, this is the very first time I experienced we work as a team with 20 members. We worked together with teamwork. I had learnt to contribute myself into the environment when our leader had distributed the tasks to us, also we learnt to appreciate each other. Time passes, people trapped in overnight works, this is how we stand together. We helped each other, we knew each other deeper, and eventually we enhanced our teamwork skill, which I think this is the largest learning outcome for myself in this great and wonderful short semester!
