PROJECT 2

Visitor Interpretive Centre (VIC)

Objective:

The major project requires us to individually explore architectural response within the context of the site and programmatic requirements of interpretive centre. The purpose is to showcase interpretive material related to the context/place. Emphasis is given to the resolution integrating site, program and spatial poetics.

PHASE 1 - Reading the Site – Group site documentation and interpretation

In groups, conduct data collection and analysis of the given context. The data collected will be categorize into several section:

- History and morphology of town/context & Documentation

- Natural and constructed landscapes (including large cross sections of the context)

- Circulation & movement through the town

- Built forms, typologies & patterns

- Society, ritual and communication

- SITE 1 The Paddy Fields – Micro Analysis

- SITE 1 – Physical and Digital Site model

- SITE 2 The Bagan Fishing Village – Micro Analysis

- SITE 2 – Physical and Digital Site model

For the site, we had chosen the site in Sekinchan. These site are: paddy field and the fishing village in Sekinchan.

PHASE 2: Reading the Site - Individual work

Individually, produce our own personal interpretation of the context in the form of sketches, diagrams & photographs. The personal interpretations of the overall character of the site will inform subsequent design decisions.

We conclude this by synthesizing our own personal interpretation and the SWOT analysis (Phase 1) of place that would form inspiration in the design, and then present a Design Concept for a Visitor’s Interpretive Centre derived from the issues discovered.

PHASE 3: Sketch Design (Space Planning and Experiential Spaces)

We are required to propose a design scheme which response to the site (site topography, history and socio-cultural events), functional program and users’ experiences. The site can be either the paddy field or the fishing village (from previous phase).

Final Submission:

1. 4 A1 size presentation boards

2. Progress models

3. Sketches

4. Final model in scale 1:100

Reflection

From this project, I had learnt the ability to design integrates with surrounding. Site context affects the function and purpose of design, which also emphasize the circulation and spatial typologies, layout of spaces. I also learnt to analyse the journey within a designed must be appropriate and meaningful.
